Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley to Speak in Pelham
The Diversity Oversight Committee of the Pelham Public Schools will kick off its “Aspire to Inspire” speaker series by welcoming International Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley to host two special events on Monday, Oct. 23 and Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Mr. Ashley will speak to elementary students and their families on Oct. 23 at Prospect Hill Elementary School and middle/high school students and families on Oct. 25 at Pelham Memorial High School. Each event will begin at 6:30 pm and include an opportunity for students to play chess and hear Mr. Ashley’s inspiring story.
“We are thrilled to welcome Maurice Ashley to begin this exciting initiative this school year,” said Director of Humanities and Diversity Task Force co-chair Dr. Maria Thompson. “Pelham is fortunate to have a diverse population and we look forward to sharing their stories with our students through this year’s Aspire to Inspire series.”
In addition to being an International Chess Grand Master and Chess Hall of Fame inductee, Mr. Ashley is a National championship coach, world-class commentator, tournament organizer, author, iPhone app designer, puzzle inventor, and motivational speaker. He has travelled the world as an ardent spokesperson of the character building effects of chess and has commentated on some of the biggest chess events in the world.
The event is free to attend, however guests are asked to RSVP ahead of time.
