Welcome to the world of Pupil Personnel Services! It is our hope that while navigating our website, you will get a greater sense of who we are and what we do for our students and families in Pelham. While only 10% of our student population may receive mandated services under special education, many more families will seek assistance at one time or another for a variety of needs. It is critical that our department provides balanced supports for every student to ensure equal access to the general education curriculum, as we address the whole student. Academic, health, social and emotional needs all fall within our Pupil Personnel “umbrella.”
Frequent collaboration, support and communication are needed as we intersect and overlap with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, led by Dr. Steven Garcia. Response to Intervention (RtI), while a general education initiative, sheds light on best practices for all students and is a critical component in the referral process for special education. Our work supports the systematic implementation of the strategies and interventions needed in the general education classrooms. Special education support personnel are significant members of building RtI teams as data is analyzed and students are discussed.
Our goal is to foster growth and independence in the academic, social and emotional domains for all students, with a keen focus on providing the type of environment in which a student with a disability can excel. Concerns for one’s child can be emotion filled. The comments, questions and communications initiated from our families are always welcome. It is our desire to join you as we all move forward to attain the goals and desires for your children.
