Alexander Wolff

Dear Pelham Community,

Yesterday evening, The Board of Education appointed Joe Toombs III as the District’s next Director of Physical Education, Health & Athletics. Mr. Toombs currently serves as the Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics for the East Ramapo Central School District in Spring Valley, NY and has 20 years of experience as an educator.

In his current position, Mr. Toombs leads a staff of more than 40 P.E. and Health Teachers and an athletic program fielding 70 teams and 2,000 student-athletes and I believe his breadth of experience makes him an outstanding fit for our District.

“I am honored to have been appointed as the next Director of Physical Education, Health, & Athletics for the Pelham Public Schools,” Mr. Toombs said. “I am excited to team up with our talented staff to build impactful programming. We will create strong relationships within the community and meaningful experiences for our young people. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and happy to join the Pelican family.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Toombs has demonstrated the ability to be an effective communicator who is trustworthy, reliable, organized and industrious in his leadership – all traits that emerged as top priorities during the development of our leadership profile for the position. Mr. Toombs showed all of these abilities during a robust application process that included interviews with Dr. Steven Garcia, Executive Director for HR & Leadership, Jim Hricay, Assistant Superintendent for Business, Dr. Alice Bowman, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Traci Holtz, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and myself. Mr. Toombs also interviewed with a panel of key stakeholders, including parents/guardians, teachers, coaches, administrators and students as well as the Board of Education.

Among the important experience Mr. Toombs brings to Pelham is the ability to implement health and physical education curriculum, an understanding of the budgeting process, and experience overseeing a successful athletics department in which he sought to instill positive social skills and strong character traits to help students become college/career ready. Additionally, he has experience overseeing facilities upgrades, including designing and building a variety of movement spaces at Mamaroneck High School that included all new locker rooms, a fitness center, an indoor turf area, and a wrestling/ instructional space. Recently, at Ramapo High School, Mr. Toombs designed and built a new fitness center and multi-purpose studio space.

Prior to his most recent position, Mr. Toombs served as a Physical Education Teacher and coach in the Mamaroneck School District. He holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Fordham University, a Masters in Health Education K-12 from CUNY Lehman and a Bachelor of Science K-12 Physical Education from SUNY Brockport with a Minor in Adaptive Physical Education.

Mr. Toombs is expected to officially join the Pelham Public Schools July 1, 2023.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Toombs as our newest lead Pelican and also thanking Lynn Sabia, Mark Finegan and Toni Damiano for their incredible work in leading these departments through the spring season.
