Overview
All new instructional staff holding an educational certification, including teachers, teaching assistants and administrators, have a probationary period of 2, 3 or 4 years depending on a variety of factors, including regulations at the time they were appointed and their prior professional experience.
In accordance with New York State Education Law and the District's Annual Professional Performance Review plan, all probationary candidates are formally observed by their supervisor(s) at least three times each year. All probationary candidates are reviewed annually by the Board of Education during an executive session meeting typically held in March.
At the conclusion of their probationary period, candidates become eligible for tenure, which provides additional job protections under New York State labor law. The superintendent, in consultation with the probationary employees supervisor(s), typically recommends candidates to the Board for tenure following the probationary review in March, at which time those candidates will be listed below.
The Board votes to award tenure to candidates in May, which becomes effective at the start of the following year of employment.
The District and Board of Education welcome feedback from families about all probationary employees at any time during the probationary period. Please feel free to email Dr. Champ and the Board of Education with any feedback you would like to share.
