Sock 'n' Buskin Presents "Brighton Beach Memoirs" Nov. 16-20
On the heels of receiving eight National Youth Art Awards for its 2017-2018 productions, Pelham Memorial High Schools’ Sock’n’Buskin looks to continue its success with the upcoming production of Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” at the PMHS Auditorium November 16-18.
“Brighton Beach Memoirs” is Mr. Simon’s hilarious and heartwarming semi-autobiographical portrait of a Jewish-American family as seen through the eyes of a 15-year-old boy, Eugene Morris Jerome who is preoccupied with baseball and girls. Living in cramped quarters in pre-World War 2 Brooklyn, Eugene begins to write his memoirs starring his unique family as his cast of characters. The resulting coming-of-age story is an entertaining lesson of overcoming obstacles with humor.
The play opened on Broadway in 1983 and won many accolades and is Mr. Simon’s longest running play to date. Directed by Tom Beck and Neil Schleifer, the show features students Jack Finegan, Athena Woodfin, Jack Hopkins, Sam Rodd, Maggie Solimine, Meredith Heller and Caitlin Winston.
“It’s a very rich play about a family– not just Doc Simon’s one-liner jokes,” Mr. Beck said.
“The great author Harper Lee once wrote, ‘You can choose your friends but you sure can't choose your family.’ This play closely examines the deep bonds we have with the people who share our lives -- how they sometimes make us laugh, sometimes make us cry, but always help us grow into the people we were meant to become,” added Mr. Schleifer.
Sock’n’Buskin will proudly present Brighton Beach Memoirs on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 pm with a matinee show on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 pm. All tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students/children/senior citizens. Please email email@example.com for information and reservations.
