K-5 Math
Overview
Our elementary math program is designed to have students develop their mathematical understanding, problem-solving strategies, and computational fluency and be able to analyze problems, conjecture and communicate their thinking. This balanced focus is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards and New York State Next Generation Math.
Parent Resources
Math in Focus
The Pelham School District adopted Math in Focus 2020 for all K-5 classrooms during the 2020-2021 school year (we were previously using the 2015 edition). Math in Focus is the U.S edition of the highly effective Singapore Math® curriculum. By using hands-on learning, models, and pictorial representations students are encouraged to visualize mathematical situations as they build their conceptual understanding. Students engage in problems using manipulatives, cooperative work, and written and verbal communication. Math lessons aim to develop critical-thinking skills and advance problem-solving proficiency as students are regularly asked to reason about their own and their classmates’ thinking.
Math in Focus Student Resources can be accessed through Ed on the Pelham Launchpad
Parent Roadmaps
The parent roadmaps in mathematics provide guidance to parents about what their children will be learning and how they can support that learning in grades K-8. These parent roadmaps for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.
